Public Schooling vs. Home Schooling

A good friend shared a thought with me last week about home schooling.  My wife and I have struggled over the years to discern the will of the LORD with respect to our sons’ education.  We’re supporters of homeschooling but our local schools are quite good and we’ve had no reason to feel compelled to pull the boys out.

That’s not to say we haven’t had a strong pull from family and friends.  In fact, it has been incredibly guilt-inducing at times.  Arguments for homeschooling range from “it’s easier on the schedule” to “public schools are dangerous places for kids these days”.

Heather was sharing her thoughts and said that “the safest place for your kids is right in the palm of God’s hand”.  If we can’t trust that God will take care of our kids, then we need to reexamine our faith.  If God wants our children in a public school, homeschooling is the wrong choice for them.

That said, I feel the need to reiterate that we do believe that homeschooling is a good and valid option for many parents, and certainly the best option if God leads you to do it.

Just don’t tell me that God wants us to do it.  He’s been pretty clear with us that our kids are supposed to be in the public school here.
